Ce fut un exploit sportif, un exploit national, mais aussi et surtout un exploit technique : le 15 octobre 1978, trois alpinistes français, pour la première fois, parviennent au sommet de l'Everest : Pierre Mazeaud, Nicolas Jaeger, Jean Afanassieff, accompagnés de Kurt Diemberger, alpiniste et caméraman d'altitude autrichien.
